Slice of Sunshine: Not One Size Fits All

For those of you who do not know me personally, I am what one might call “petite” (or, as it has now been re-branded, “fun-sized”).

For this reason, I am not well suited for clothing that is labeled “One Size Fits All.”

Sure, there’s something to be said for a manufacturer to not pre-determine who should wear a particular garment based on one’s physicality.

And I am not here to rail against the clothing industry (though as a multi-year veteran of working in retail I have opinions about that) nor am I here to opine that manufacturers could replace that phrase with “One Size Fits Many” (though that does seem like an easy fix).

am here to suggest that we could all benefit from being discerning about what we hear we “should” be doing and how we “should” be navigating what is proving to be a difficult and troubling time for many folks.

(NOTE: The Slice of Sunshine Newsletter is intentionally a politics-free space.)

Lots of people in the education/coaching space have been sharing their thoughts. Even I chimed in (click below to watch video).

However, none of these suggestions should be taken at face value. Even mine!

If a recommendation, practice, affirmation or mantra resonates with you, great! Use it. Some that I have heard from folks:

  • Don’t let “them” steal your joy
  • Take one small action step every day
  • Pace yourself: this is a marathon, not a sprint
  • Daily gratitude practice (one client does an “F This” list instead)
  • You are enough

To figure out what will be best for you may require taking time, turning your focus inward and connecting with your “inner knowing.”

And from that place of connection, you—not your ego, not your shadow self, not your performative identity—can find what fits you best.

Less “One Size Fits All” and more “One Size Fits One.”

“When the Buddha wanted to find out how suffering happened and how to end it, and discovered that no one could tell him, his response was to find out for himself.
